Today is the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and there are events and commemorations taking place all over the UK today. From the British Legion ‘Black Out’, encouraging homes and businesses across the country to turn out their lights and leave a single candle burning for an hour at 10pm tonight, community commemorations including this one in Stockton, to this absolutely stunning artwork ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ depicting a sea of ceramic poppies, one for each British military fatality, flowing like blood from the Tower of London.
How is your community or family marking the centenary? Upload photos of your event and record the events as they are happening by downloading the Memory Box Stories app. We’ll be featuring a collection of stories about memories of the war and about the centenary on Wednesday this week.
