Winter Edition 2013

This week in the Flo office we are gearing up for Christmas – decorating the office, designing our Christmas card and of course, we have just released our latest Edition of Memory Box, the Winter Edition.

Following on from our first app update designed for Apple’s new operating system iOS 7, this Edition features a brand new Guest Editor, Kate Fox. Kate is an incredibly talented poet and comedian who has recently served as Poet in Residence for Glastonbury Festival and Great North Run Culture.

Her story ‘Tynemouth Voice’ is available to listen to on the app and iterates how she fell in love with the North East seaside town. She describes how the river flows out to the sea from the river mouth as if it is speaking; and how after finally being given the opportunity to speak on radio, she began writing poems.

Tynemouth Voice, Kate Fox

‘Tynemouth Voice’ is all about the importance of having a voice and hearing the insightful stories that everyone, somewhere inside themselves, has to tell. Even what might seem mundane and every day to one person might reveal a world never imagined to someone else.

“Stories record moments of change, sometimes unknowingly. Moments when worlds open up. The catalyst can be a film, a day trip, a birth… The ripples keep radiating and the telling of the story itself becomes another of them.” – Kate Fox.

Kate has chosen a selection of stories that you can find on the ‘Featured’ page of the app on your iPad or iPhone. Download here.

We’re also excited to be able to pin stories to the Memory Box map outside of the UK in this Edition, which features a number of stories from Los Angeles in the USA. Sally embarked on an International Cultural Exchange back in September and funded by the British Council and the Department of Cultural Affairs ran workshops in Los Angeles Public Library. There are some really fab stories on there ranging from the Los Angeles jazz scene to a story about one woman’s personal but brave stand against the curfew during the Rodney King Riots. Sally will be writing a more detailed post about her experience of L.A and all the inspiring organisations she came across whilst over there.

As the team and anyone who has ever met me will know, I love the Christmas period, so to celebrate the best time of the year we have also put together a Christmas Edition of the app featuring festive stories coming later this month so keep a look out!
